Somay Roof Mastic
Product Data Sheet

PRODUCT BENEFITS: SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC"® will seal, water-proof and protect practically any smooth, structurally sound roof surface that was properly designed with positive drainage, when it is applied at the proper thickness according to these instructions. TWO VERY THICK COATS of liquid SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" must be applied so that they dry and cure to a virtually impenetrable, flexible, seamless, waterproofing, protective membrane.

SURFACE PREPARATION: The secret of a successful painting job is proper surface preparation. Surfaces MUST be free of anything which could adversely affect the adhesion of this coating to the surface, including loose, scaling, peeling, blistering, chipping, cracking, flaking, chalking or powdering paint; dust, dirt, sand, soot, grease, oil, tar, wax, soap film or petroleum-based residue; lye, lime, chlorine, salt, calcimine, efflorescence, or any other chemically reactive substance; and must be completely free of all mold, fungus, mildew or any other growing organism of any kind. Infirm surfaces MUST be made firm.

High-pressure (min. 2,500 P.S.I.) water should be used to thoroughly clean all surfaces prior to the application of a coating. Mildew and similar growths MUST be killed with a 2% chlorine solution, followed by a thorough rinse with clean water.

PRIME SURFACES: Following proper surface preparation, apply one (1) coat of undiluted SOMAY Product No. 777, SOMAY "PST" , Primer, Sealer, Topcoat (Clear), prior to caulking or the application of the first coat of SOMAY  "ROOF MASTIC"

NOTE: If applying "ROOF MASTIC" to shingles that are old, brittle or curling, prior to the application of No. 777 "PST" Primer and No. 842, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC", apply one coat of SOMAY Product No. 789, SOMAY "SHINGLE PREP", which is formulated to soften old shingles so that they will be flexible and will lie flat on the surface. SOMAY "SHINGLE PREP" is applied at a maximum rate of 200 sq.ft. gal. but is designed to be absorbed by the shingles, not to build any film thickness on top of the shingles.

CAULKING: It is more efficient and economical to develop a seamless waterproofing membrane with SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" when it is applied to surfaces that are very smooth. Therefore, all cracks, holes and similar irregularities should be filled and made very smooth using SOMAY Product No. 992, SOMAY "PATCH & SEAL", a brush-on caulk

APPLICATION: SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" MUST BE APPLIED FULL STRENGTH as it is supplied by the manufacturer. NEVER THIN, DILUTE or ADULTERATE with any other material. Any thinning will reduce the percentage of solids, which will adversely affect the adhesiveness, the hiding, the sealing ability and the durability of the applied coating. Stir product thoroughly before and frequently during application. Apply only to properly prepared, primed, dry surfaces, without undue delay between the application of each coat.

APPLICATION RATE: To develop a waterproofing membrane with SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC", a MINIMUM OF TWO (2) full coats, each 20 mils (.020 inch or .0508 cm) thick MUST BE APPLIED, providing a TOTAL MINIMUM DRY FILM THICKNESS for both coats of 40 mils (.040 inch or .1016 cm). On a very smooth, non-porous surface, one (1) gallon of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" may cover up to, but never more than, 50 sq. ft. with a 20 mils thick coating; two (2) gallons may cover up to 50 sq. ft. with the required 40 mils thickness, so a minimum of four (4) gallons (14.14L) will be required for two coats for every 100 sq. ft. (9.29 sq.m.)

APPLICATION METHOD: On residential roofs, an easy, practical and effective application method is to use a broom or a brush with long, very soft bristles, laying the SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" onto the surface to create a continuous, seamless, waterproofing membrane. On larger roof surfaces, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" may be applied using conventional airless spray equipment with a standard tip size (.019 to .023) normally used to apply a high quality acrylic latex coating.

WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS: Before application, KEEP FROM FREEZING. Apply only at temperatures above 50° F. (10° C.). Apply only when the weather will be fair for a sufficiently long time for the coating to dry. Do not apply late in the afternoon or early evening when a heavy dew could develop before the coating dries. A heavy rainstorm could wash the coating off during the first few hours after application if it has not dried thoroughly.

DRYING TIME: Drying time will vary depending on both ambient and surface temperature, humidity, wind or air movement, exposure to sunlight, thickness of coating applied, etc. Under ideal drying conditions, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" forms a dew or light shower-resistant membrane in approx. 30 to 60 minutes after application, and dries sufficiently in approx. twenty-four (24) hours to permit the application of the second coat of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC". A longer drying time will be required if the surface being coated is not completely dry, if the air or surface temperature is below 50° F., if the relative humidity is higher than 90%, if the air is calm, if the surface is not exposed to direct sunlight, or if too thick a coat (more than 20 mils) is applied.

CLEAN UP: Using clean water, IMMEDIATELY FLUSH SPILLS OR DRIPS FROM SHRUBBERY, WALKWAYS, DRIVEWAYS, ETC., BEFORE SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" IS ALLOWED TO SET UP. Clean hands, brushes, rollers, tools and other equipment immediately after use in warm, soapy water.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS: SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" , reinforced with SOMAY "POLY-MESH", can be used to make a flexible, waterproof flashing around vents, stacks, chimneys or similar protrusions through the roof surface, or over joints or surface junctions such as at a parapet, etc. Just apply a coat of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC", then while it is still wet, imbed the SOMAY POLY-MESH reinforcing membrane into the SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" … let dry … then apply a second coat of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC". For more information about special situations, contact the manufacturer.

PRODUCT LIMITATIONS: This coating is NOT intended for use on: improperly prepared, infirm or structurally unsound surfaces; below normal grade or ground level; on the inside of tanks or pools; where it will be subject to standing water for an extended period of time; where it will be subjected to any acts of carelessness which might cause a puncture or rupture of the waterproofing membrane, such as pedestrian traffic, furniture legs, the installation of air conditioners, antennas, etc.

CAUTION! Harmful if swallowed. Do not take internally. Close container after each use. Avoid prolonged contact with skin and breathing of vapors. Use with adequate ventilation.

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

KEEP FROM FREEZING while in storage or transit before application.
