Somay Poly-Mesh Reinforcing Membrane

SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC"®, reinforced with SOMAY POLY-MESH, can be used where desired to seal and create a flexible, waterproof flashing or joint, for example:

A)     To seal and waterproof where a Florida Room or other addition is attached to a house or mobile home;

B)     To seal and create a new, flexible, waterproof flashing around a vent, stack, chimney, turbine or similar protrusion installed through a roof;

C)     To seal and reinforce deteriorating, worn or  weak areas on roofs that may leak, such as valleys, gutters, joints, overlaps, surface junctions, such as at parapets, etc.;

D)     To seal leaking nail holes, seams, cracks, breaks, tears, etc., in shingles, tar paper, roofing paper, slates, tiles, etc.;

E)     To seal leaks at joints, such as where corrugated galvanized metal or plastic sheets overlap;

F)     To seal holes causing leaks where fasteners, such as screws, bolts, or  nails, have rusted or worked loose, or where rubber or plastic waterproofing grommets have deteriorated or worn out;

G)     To reinforce a SOMAY waterproofing coating on any roof surface, or SOMAY WALL MASTIC on any wall surface.

How To Use Somay Poly-Mesh

Follow all of SOMAY's normal procedures for the application of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC", including:

1)     Thorough Surface Cleaning and Preparation.

2)     Priming with SOMAY Product No. 777, SOMAY "PST".

3)     Caulking with SOMAY Product No. 992, SOMAY "PATCH & SEAL".

4)     Application of the first coat of SOMAY Product No. 842, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" over the area, joint, seam, crack, etc. that you want to reinforce.

5)     While the first (1st) coat of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" is still wet, i.e., before it has had an opportunity to "set", dry or cure, press the SOMAY POLY-MESH Reinforcing Membrane into the wet SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC".  Be sure the SOMAY POLY-MESH is well imbedded into the wet coating of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC".  Normally, some of the SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" will ooze through the open mesh of the SOMAY POLY-MESH Membrane.  The coating of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" should extend beyond the edges of the SOMAY POLY-MESH so there are no edges of SOMAY POLY-MESH that are not tightly adhering to the surface.

6)     Allow the first coat of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC", with the SOMAY POLY-MESH imbedded in it, to dry and cure.

7)     After approximately 24 hours, when the SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" is dry, then it is time to apply the second (2nd) coat of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" , this one being on top of the SOMAY  POLY-MESH.

The SOMAY POLY-MESH Reinforcing Membrane, when sandwiched between the first and second coats of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC", will help make a stronger, more flexible, and more durable waterproofing patch, flashing, joint or coating.

Use Restrictions

These coatings are NOT intended for use on: improperly prepared, infirm or structurally unsound surfaces; on tar and gravel roof surfaces or wooden shake covered surfaces; below normal grade or ground level; on the inside of tanks or pools; where it will be subject to constant immersion or standing water for an extended period of time; where it will be subjected to any acts of carelessness which might cause a puncture or rupture of the waterproofing membrane, such as pedestrian traffic, moving heavy furniture with rough feet, the installation of air conditioners or antennas through the roof, etc.

Flat Roofs with Ponding Water

SOMAY does NOT recommend the SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" system be applied on a "flat" roof that has "ponding" water (puddles of water after a rain storm).  Rather, SOMAY believes one should use only coatings especially formulated for constant immersion in water.

SOMAY Product No. 814-01, Rubber Waterproofing Coating, "Reflective White", is a single-component, rubber-copolymer, elastomeric waterproofing sealant and coating for flat roof surfaces. It has "Energy Star" and UL Class A Fire Rating Certification.   Apply two (2) coats, each at a maximum spreading rate of no more than 70 sq.ft./gal. per coat on a smooth, non-porous surface, to develop 10 mils DFT per coat, totaling 20 mils DFT for 2 coats. Rough and/or very porous surfaces will require the use of considerably more material to develop the required dry film thickness. Substitute SOMAY "Polaroof RAC" as the first or prime coat over old asphalt surfaces to prevent tar color "bleed through" and discoloration of the "White" color of the finish coating.  It's smart roof maintenance practice to clean the roof a couple of times each year!

Tar and Gravel Surfaces

On any tar and gravel surface we recommend that ALL the gravel be removed in order that one has a clean, very smooth, firm and dry surface on which to apply a coating.  If the gravel is not removed, then one will use many times more material to build a coating film, and risk the possibility that the coating could have voids and not form a satisfactory waterproofing membrane over the entire surface area.  Therefore, SOMAY cannot recommend the application of any coating over any tar & gravel surface when the purpose of the coating is to build a waterproofing coating or membrane on top of the tar & gravel roof surface.
